Spring Cleaning

Spring is here!

It is that time of year. The trees are blooming, the grass is getting greener, the sun is shining, and the snow is finally melting. Now that the warmer weather has finally arrived, it is a great time to complete your spring-cleaning list for your roof. If you get it done now, you don’t have to worry about it for the rest of the spring and summer months. This means you get to sit back and enjoy.

The List

Spring is a great time to clean and inspect your roof to ensure it is in good condition for the rest of the year. Here are some tips for spring-cleaning your roof:

Inspect the roof for damage: Walk around the perimeter of your home and inspect your roof for any visible signs of damage such as missing or cracked shingles, loose flashing, or damaged gutters. You want to make sure that the snow and ice don’t cause any of the shingles to lift or crumble due to moisture.

Clean the gutters: Clean out any debris that has accumulated in your gutters over the winter months. This will help prevent clogs and water damage.

Check for moss or algae growth: Moss and algae can grow on your roof, particularly in areas with low sunlight or high humidity. Use a solution of equal parts water and bleach to kill the moss or algae, then rinse with a garden hose. If you don’t feel comfortable doing this, you can always call your roofing specialist.

Trim overhanging branches: If you have trees near your roof, trim any overhanging branches to prevent them from rubbing against the roof or dropping leaves and debris onto the roof. If you don’t, you risk home damage over the next few months, especially during spring thunderstorms.

Check the attic: Go into your attic and check for any signs of leaks, such as water stains or damp insulation. If you see any signs of this, call your professional right away because this could lead to a mold infestation.

These few items should only take you a few hours, so don’t wait! Get them done sooner rather than later.

What if you don’t have time?

While this short list should not take very long, some people may not have the time or be physically capable.
